The Kingdom of Sardinia included not just the Island of Sardinia but also a large part of what is now North-West Italy around Turin.
The first issue in 1851 is scarce. After that embossing was used for issues in 1853 and 1854, with a plain coloured background which makes it very difficult to read the denomination.

In 1855 a fourth design was issued consisting of six values up to 2 lire. This continued in use until some time after the formation of the Kingdom of Italy. The series shows a wide range of colour variations examples of which are shown below. As these correspond to different printings, a clear date on the postmark can be an aid to identification of some of the shades.

A series of stamps denominated in centesimi were prepared for use in the Naples area, but were never issued. They are similar to normal Sardinian stamps, but with much clearer legends.
