1955 issue, Stars Watermark

A range of values in the same design as the 1946 issue was first issued with a stars watermark in 1955. There are three different types of stars watermark used: Type I with sharp clear stars aligned horizontally; Type II with slightly less clear stars aligned at an angle; Type IV is as Type I but the stars are much less sharp.

Type III is similar to Type II, with some stars less well aligned, and was only used for the two high values as shown below.

The Use of Complete Pairs

In the normal course of events parcel stamps are placed over the boundary between the parcel card and the receipt on the right, which is then separated. Thus used parcel stamps are generally found in halves. Italian collectors like their used examples to be intact pairs, but Stanley Gibbons implies that such used pairs must have been favour cancelled. This is demonstrably not the case. This Swiss parcel card demonstrates one of the occasions when genuine use (rather than a favour cancel) results in an unsplit pair.

In this case parcel stamps have been used to collect a fee of 1100 lire on a parcel from Switzerland. Note that although the value is given twice on each pair, this does not mean that this is the amount paid for each half.

Here is an example where the stamp has been used alongside a Concessionary Parcels stamp, again being used as an intact pair as a receipt for a fee payable by the addressee.

Sassone 96/II (parcel) and 21 (concessionary parcel)

Finally, here is another example where 1000 lire parcel stamp has been used as an intact pair as a receipt for a fee payable by the addressee for a parcel sent from the USA.
