Initial Issue

On the accession of Victor Emmanuel III (Re Vittorio Emanuele III in Italian) to the throne in 1900 after the assassination of Umberto I, arrangements were made to issue stamps bearing his portrait. The three low values, 1c, 2c and 5c were considered too low to bear His Majesty's portrait, but the higher denominations utilised a design by Giuseppe Cellini which became known as the Floreale design.
