Italian Submarine Forces were based in Bordeaux from 1942. Initially letters were stamped with a double ringed handstamp inscribed 'Forze subacquee italiane in Atlantico'. On 11th October 1943 overprinted Italian stamps were issued. The first type is very rare, with just 200 examples of each of 5 values being issued.
