The World's first ever Airmail Stamp was issued on 20th May 1917. Since then the Italian Post Office has issued very many types of airmail stamp.

There was a good deal of controversy at the time of issue, as each of the values were printed in a sheet of 20 triptychs, each of which had a different aircraft code representing the first four letters of the name of the pilot. As a result, to get complete sheets containing all the different stamps would set you back no less than 1500 lire, an enormous sum for a collector in 1933.
